The world-famous San Diego Zoo is located adjacent to downtown San Diego in beautiful Balboa Park which is a 100 acre facility that houses over 4000 animals representing over 800 species from jungles, forests, grasslands, and deserts from around the world. The best way to experience the zoo is by walking it, but there is also a 35 minute bus tour that guides visitors through the zoo and provides a general overview so they can determine which areas of the zoo they might want to go back and explore more closely. All animals are exhibited in the most natural way possible and the zoo also provides shows and presentations throughout the day for a complete educational experience. If you’re wondering about time allotment, zoo officials have found that most people who can dedicate a minimum of three to four hours to the park have the best experience. The zoo has exhibits representing the amphibian, bird, mammal, reptile, and insect animal categories and showcases habitats and eco-systems from:

  • Desert
  • Island
  • Ocean and Coastline
  • Prairie and Steppe
  • River, Lake, and Wetland
  • Savanna
  • Scrubland
  • Temperate forest and Taiga
  • Tropical Rain Forest
  • Tundra

Additionally, the zoo has a huge conservation program with initiatives to inspire “change by educating and motivating people to take action that will protect and nurture the natural world.”The hours of the zoo vary by season and holiday, so it’s best to check their online calendar before heading out to spend the day in fun and fascination!
