Concierges' Recommended Sunsets
Our extra hour of daylight means we can take our time getting to the perfect place to see the sunset. Some of our local concierges took their time to recommend their favorite viewing spots.
Reine Rimon of Holiday Inn on the Bay chose an old favorite, Ocean Beach. The free parking and added bonus of the Ocean Beach pier makes this an easy location, she says. “But for something a little different, I recommend Cabrillo Monument. You can see 360 degrees; you have the lighthouse. It is one of the most special places,” she tells her guests. It’s one of San Diego’s lesser known treasures, she says, perhaps because it’s a little out of the way. If you don’t have a car and have a little patience, you can take the bus. “Lots of people like to jog, so if they like a long, challenging run from my hotel, it’s perfect for them,” she says.
Brett Hamblen of the Hotel Del Coronado would rather leave the driving to one of the captains of Seaforth Boat Rental while he relaxes on a sunset sail. If it’s not his day off, he says his favorite view is “from our beach! The colors reflect off our white building, turning it amber.” He’s undaunted about the sun falling behind Point Loma before it hits the sea, he says, “because 1500 Ocean, our elegant restaurant, takes advantage of the light, creating a comfortable amber glow.”
Enjoying a sunset cocktail is also a favorite recommendation of Dean Laurens of Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. His pick is the Marine Room restaurant in La Jolla. But for his guests’ complete convenience, he tells them to drive down to the beach and park the car anywhere on the coast. “Watch the waves and see the sunset, then take a beach walk afterwards,” he says. He adds that he has a sunset view every working day. “Right through our lobby.”
Laura Diaz-Kim of the Glorietta Bay Inn says there’s no place better than Coronado for her, so she recommends the Ferry Landing on Glorietta Bay or the Hotel Del beach. Many of her guests love the cove at La Jolla and the park benches nearby, she says. But she gives a warning about that gorgeous location. “There are so many pleasant distractions there that sometimes they miss the actual sunset,” she says.
Oh, well. Just stay another day and catch it manana. You have plenty of time.
