Spring EquinoxEarly Egyptians created perhaps the most famous monument to spring. They built the Great Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising sun on the day of the vernal equinox. Equinox refers to the two days during the year when night and day are of equal length. One occurs in spring, called vernal, the other in fall, called autumnal. As we celebrate spring in the northern hemisphere, people south of the equator are anticipating autumn. San Diegans are looking forward to longer days, more sunshine, fields of flowers and the national pastime. Daylight savings time begins on March 9, when we set our clocks ahead one hour, leaving more light at the end of the day for enjoying the natural beauty all around us. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch open on March 1, and the 50-plus acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus are on display in all their glorious colors. The only commercial field in the world open to the public, The Flower Fields also boast an All American Rose Garden and the famous Ecke poinsettias. For a special treat, tour the anch on a tractor! Kids Day is March 29, with special activities for the youngsters. With the advent of spring, the desert may put on a flower show at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California’s largest state park. If the weather conditions have been just right, the show can be spectacular. Even if it isn’t an optimum wildflower year, there are still the palm groves, cacti and the chance to spot one of the park’s local inhabitants, such as the shy and elusive bighorn sheep for which it is named (Borrego is its Spanish name. Its other namesake is Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza). The gorgeous vistas and wonderful hiking trails are a grand spring experience, no matter what the rainfall has been. San Diego County’s Farmers Markets and local farm stands seem especially welcoming during the season, with locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers sold in over two dozen local sites. Ocean Beach (see p.4) is a particular favorite. Browsing the booths and sampling the fare are favorite local pastimes. Pick up a bouquet to bring spring home with you. The beginning of baseball season may be a man-made ritual, but it’s no less anticipated. The San Diego Padres wend their ways, bats and bases to PETCO Park for this month’s home games. They host the LA Angels of Anaheim on Friday, the 28th, and the Houston Astros on Monday, the 31st for the official home opener. For more information: |
